Being able to demonstrate rigging tasks is a prerequisite skill set for any person involved in using rigging hardware to lift objects with cranes or hoists. The rigging skill required varies between lifting simple, light loads and the more complex, heavy rigging of huge, critical lifts.

This program covers all the fundamentals, including necessary training and qualifications of riggers, general standards, rigging components, rigging hook-ups, hand signals, and the inspection and controls of rigging hardware.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

Lesson 1: Introduction

Lesson 2: Rigging Overview

• Explain terms related to safe rigging and lifting processes.

Lesson 3: Safe Use of Wire Rope
• Discuss design elements and components used in the construction of wire rope.
• Identify the types and application of wire ropes.
• Explain safety factors used in the application of wire ropes and slings.
• Discuss the strength and efficiency of various wire rope connections.

Lesson 4: Safe Use of Hardware
• Identify rigging hardware.
• Identify standards required for using hardware.
• Explain how to inspect various types of hardware and how to recognize when hardware can no longer be used safely.

Lesson 5: Safety in Rigging Mechanics
• Discuss how to size slings based on angle and weight.
• Discuss the effect of the center of gravity on rigging planning.
• Explain how to calculate tension on rigging.

Lesson 6: Safe Operating Practices
• Discuss how the person on the ground assists the crane operator.
• Introduce tag lines and their safe use.
• Explain hand signals used for crane movement.
